...in Stadsparken in Sollefteå, Sweden. The year was 1999. An ardent enthusiast commissioned to promote local entrepreneurial spirit wanted to give young people the opportunity to launch their own undertakings within the scope of a summer work programme offered by the municipality. She knew there were young people with ideas and a supportive business community.
It was the same year that Ellinor and Lina, both 17 at the time, started their summer café. The concept was simple and successful. The city park was there, green, pleasant and undeveloped. People wanted to enjoy their coffee under the bright summer sun. The girls were capable bakers. The army had plenty of blankets and the Co-op supermarket had baskets. The result was the Pick-Nick Café and an abundance of contacts, lessons learned and cash in hand for the girls plus enjoyment and sustenance for satisfied customers in the lovely surroundings.
Many years have passed and each one has witnessed new young people getting into the act.
The method, tools and models have been developed and refined by Open for Business(OFB) in the county of Västernorrland and the concept are now being spread to a host of other locations around Sweden and also international.
The programme is known as Summer Entrepreneur and its good reputation is travelling fast!
Summer Entrepreneur has three principals
As a summer entrepreneur you are given the opportunity to create your own business, your own summer job, your own summer company, based on your ideas and needs. It's an opportunity to put enterprise into practise and challenge the entrepreneur in you. You'll learn plenty about entrepreneurship, enterprise and yourself. You'll become part of an integrated package with inspiring and encouraging advisors, a great get-started week, access to useful networks, friendly mentors and other summer entrepreneurs. You're covered by insurance for the entire period and, as icing on the cake, you'll receive a little start capital. Then, it's get up and go! You'll turn your summer into an experience you're not likely to forget.
As a Summer Entrepreneur organizer you get the chance to support young people's ideas, growth and entrepreneurship through a tried and tested approach with unique conditions, sharp tools and a quality license.
As an advisor you will be certified after successful completion of a 3-day course and gain access to a bank of educational models and practical support that is assembled within the scope of the concept. You'll receive training in the unique approach to self-esteem, creativity, enterprise and entrepreneurship that characterizes OFB's undertakings. Working together with "your" organizer you'll be making a contribution of great value to young people and you'll feel it, everyday.
More than 100,000 children, young people and adults have participated in OFB's workshops, activities and programmes over the past five years.
